This book is a collection of the letters between the brothers and sisters of Giacomo Leopardi and Prospero Viani, admirable editor and collector of Leopardi’s works. The letters contain stories written by Paolina, Carlo and Pierfrancesco and follow the tortuous steps of Leopardi’s childhood and adolescence. Everything is told from the particular point of view of the people who heard the famous Italian author’s confessions and shared his hopes and pains. The picture is that of an intimate Leopardi, whom his brothers and sisters could hardly believe had become so famous and loved both in Italy and abroad. The result is an amazing fresco in which the first-hand testimony and biographical stories flank the punctual reconstruction of the first stages of the growing fortune of Leopardi’s works and thought.
