Open Access

EUM recognises open access as a fundamental principle of contemporary scholarly communication, in full compliance with national, European and international guidelines. Consistent with the University's policy and the obligations deriving from research funding programmes, the publishing house requires all scientific works, whether monographs or contributions published in the academic journals it manages, to be published in open access digital format. This choice responds to the objective of making research results publicly available, without economic or technical barriers, favouring dissemination, citability and responsible re-use of content.

The coexistence of printed editions distributed through commercial channels is envisaged, where required, as long as it does not conflict with the principle of open access to digital versions. All content published under open access is accompanied by licences governing its use.

Open access contributions include publications of original scientific research results, raw data and metadata, sources, digital graphic and image representations, and scientific multimedia materials. Each open access contribution must fulfil two requirements:

  • The author and the holder of the rights to this contribution grant all users the free, irrevocable and universal right of access to it and the authorisation to reproduce, use, distribute, transmit and publicly display it for non-commercial purposes, in any digital format for any responsible purpose, subject to the authentic attribution of authorship, as well as the right to reproduce a limited number of printed copies for their own use;
  • A complete version of the contribution and all accompanying materials, in an electronic format according to an appropriate standard, is deposited (and thus published) in at least one digital repository that employs appropriate technical standards and that is supported and maintained by an academic institution, scholarly society, government agency, or any other recognized organization that pursues the goals of open access, unrestricted distribution, interoperability, and long-term archiving.
