Description

Thanks to the contributions of various authors, this book analyses the human and cultural dimension of Filippo Salviati, who became immortal thanks to Galileo’s Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems. The book underlines the crucial figure of the new intellectual, a philosopher free from the dogmas established by authorities and whose inquiries focus solely on nature and the creation of the universe. This is only possible if there is freedom to conduct research. Salviati understood the importance of Galileo’s research and of the Lincean Academy. He was also a strong and active supporter of this project, sharing its philosophical and scientific research during the early years in Florence after Galileo’s return from Padua. He sustained Galileo not only as his patron and host, but, most of all, as a reference point and as the person with whom he discussed his new discoveries in public debate. He also understood and supported the cultural foresight of the Accademia della Crusca in its attempt to create a dictionary. His abrupt departure for a journey from which he would never return opens unsettling horizons and grounded hypotheses about the enemies of free philosophers.
