Description

The result of extensive research carried out at the Department of Education, Cultural Heritage and Tourism at the University of Macerata, this book brings to life the stretch of the Via Lauretana traversing the Marche region. The author draws upon ancient maps, diaries written by pilgrims and period guidebooks for travellers to divide the study into stages, as though the reader is stopping at the ancient staging posts situated along the Via Laurentana. Although focusing on reconstructing the itinerary mile after mile, the analysis considers the Via Lauretana in all its forms -  a complex system of different itineraries, including the main religious sites and ancient accommodation facilities. In other words, the book tries to paint the engaging image of the Via Lauretana as threads running the cloth of the territory, tracing its religious, social and economic dynamics.
