Edith Bruck was born in Hungary in 1932. She was deported to Auschwitz in 1944 with her parents, two brothers and sister. She was a survivor of the Nazi extermination camps and, after many peregrinations in different countries, including Israel, she settled in Italy in 1954 and adopted the Italian language. In 1959 she published her first autobiographical novel, called Chi ti ama così and later began her career as a writer, inaugurating her long activity as a witness of the Shoah. She next wrote the short story Andremo in città (Lerici, 1962), from which her husband Nelo Risi made the film by the same name, and more than twenty works of fiction and poetry, such as Le sacre nozze (Longanesi, 1969), Mio splendido disastro (Bompiani, 1979), Lettera alla madre (Garzanti, 1988), Nuda proprietà (Marsilio, 1993), L'attrice (Marsilio, 1995), Signora Auschwitz (Marsilio, 1999), Quanta stella c'è nel cielo” (Garzanti, 2009), adapted for the cinema by Roberto Faenza, La donna dal cappotto verde (Garzanti, 2012) and La rondine sul termosifone (La nave di Teseo, 2017). She has been translated into many languages and has received several literary awards, including the “Rapallo Carige” and “Viareggio”. She has written for the theatre, television, radio and cinema and has translated, among others, Attila Jòzsef and Miklòs Radnòti.
