VARIAZIONI DACOSTIANE

The 25 years since the rediscovery and publication of Exame das tradiços phariseas (1993) have not seen a vast array of research and publications on this work even though it possess all the characteristics of a fundamental opus if one considers just the special Averroistic tradition to which it belongs and the developments provided by Spinoza. Despite the importance and centrality of this rediscovered work, it seems that over the past 25 years, a “conspiracy of silence” has arisen, or never dissipated, with the aim of erasing the Exame from history and reintroducing the antisemitic rhetoric of the pseudo Dacostian Exemplar humanae vitae. In response to this silence and rhetoric, this book illustrates the complexities of the work, analytically identifying the authors, works, and editions which belonged to the very rich Dacostian library.

Omero Proietti is an associate professor of History of Modern Philosophy at the University of Macerata. His many works include the monographs La città divisa. Flavio Giuseppe, Spinoza e i farisei (Il Calamo, Roma 2003); Uriel da Costa e l’«Exemplar humanae vitae» (Quodlibet, Macerata 2005); «Agnostos theos». Il carteggio Spinoza-Oldenburg, 1675-1676 (Quodlibet, Macerata 2006); «Philedonius, 1657». Spinoza, Van den Enden e i classici latini (Eum, Macerata 2010); Il carteggio Van Gent-Tschirnhaus (1679-1690). Storia, cronistoria, contesto dell’«editio posthuma» spinoziana (Eum, Macerata 2013). In 2005, he published a critical edition of Tractatus politicus (Puf, Paris). He also translated and annotated the Tractatus theologico politicus, the Tractatus politicus, many of Spinoza’s Epistolae (Mondadori, Milano 2007, 2015²). Recently, he has published a critical work, its translation and a detailed comment on Exame das tradiços phariseas (Eum, Macerata 2014).
